Pinhole Photographs and Digital Montages created to feature in the book
Carnet de Stenope Vol IV; India - Mountain, Town & Desert
The following Pinhole Photographs and also the images used in the Digital Montages were created during a 10 week tour of north and central India in late 2010. The square photographs were made using the lensless wooden box, the rectangular photographs with the converted 1950's Box Brownie and the colour digital photogrpahs with a Nikon D80. No film was used in the pinhole process; all photos were made straight onto Ilford Multigrade glossy photographic paper and feature (along with over 100 others) in the limited edition book 'Carnet de Stenope Vol IV; India - Mountain, Town & Desert' which you can buy via the Paypal link at the bottom of the page.

Postage stamps brought in India were fixed to both regular Limited Edition (red covers) and Special Editions (cream covers).
The Special Edition, presented in bags made from Tibetan prayer flags (shown here yet to be sewn together) with incense sticks. All materials were brought back from McCloud Ganj in the Himalaya, the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in Exile.
The second to last stage of the project was to burn all 1600 negatives taken in India. This is to ensure that there is no remaining body of work that might be of interest to collectors. The image top right is of a cremation in Varanasi. It shouldn't have been taken; that it was is testament to my weakness and lack of decency. It's only right that it should be burnt. Those following it are handprints of widows on their way to commit Sati - that is, on their way to hurl themselves upon the funeral pyre of their dead husbands. Again, a fitting end to the image.
